Bolivia 1727-P Y 4 reales
This specimen was lot 1246 in Áureo y Calicó sale 346 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €2,600 (about US$3,431 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"1727/6. Luis I. Potosí. Y. 4 reales. Redonda. Tipo "Real". Perforación habitual en estas piezas. Ex Áureo & Calicó Selección 2018, nº 286. Extraordinariamente rara. MBC+. (kingdom of Spain, Louis I, four reales of 1727, round, "royal" type, with the usual perforation. Extraordinarily rare, choice very fine.)"
While the denomination, assayer and overdate are clear on this specimen, the king's name is completely missing. We follow Cayón in attributing this to Philip V. In fact, this specimen is shown therein on p. 904. Eight reales cobs from 1727 are definitely known for Luis. We also have a 1727 two reales, which was allegedly struck for Luis, but the name is also muddled on that specimen.
Recorded mintage: unknown but a rare date.
Specification: 13.54 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 13,10 g.
