Stack's Bowers November 2022 Collectors Choice sale, lot 71190
SB1122-71190r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71190 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. Cob 4 Reales, 1719-P. Potosi Mint; Assayer Diego de Ybarbouru (Y). Philip V. PCGS Genuine--Salt Water Damage, EF Details. Through the moderate saltwater damage, it is clear that the underlying coin is nicely centered and well-preserved. The obverse central devices show the denomination, assayer, and date rather clearly. The reverse is just as pleasing, with an added assayer and somewhat corroded date surrounding the attractive central cross with its castles and lions. An impressive example, especially for a shipwreck salvage. From the Pat Johnson Collection. Ex: Princess Louisa shipwreck (sunk in 1743 off the coast of Cape Verde)." This type was struck for Philip V through his entire reign. Assayer Y stamped coins 1701-28. The silver cobs were debased from 0.931 fine to 0.917 fine in 1728.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 11.71 g.
