This specimen was lot 71148 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. Cob 4 Reales, 1684-P. Potosi Mint; Assayer Pedro de Villar (V). Charles II. PCGS EF-45. A handsomely toned cob overflowing with details. The obverse displays two mintmarks, two assayer initials, denomination, and the final digit of the date. The reverse is still more impressive, offering another mintmark and assayer initial along with the denomination and a boldly readable date, all surrounding castles and lions that have been rendered in unusually fine style. Fragments of the outer legend are visible on both sides. This particularly complete example is wholly attractive. From the Pat Johnson Collection." This type was struck in the name of the degenerate Charles II 1667-1700. Assayer de Villar stamped coins with a "V" 1679-84 and a "VR" 1684-97.
