Aureo y Calicó sale 448, lot 207

This specimen was lot 72084 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2024), where it sold for $360. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. Cob 8 Reales, 1674-P E. Potosi Mint. Charles II. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, VF Details. A boldly struck and lightly toned Cob, with mintmark and assayer information clear on the obverse. The date appears faintly as two digits on the obverse, clearly as three digits on the reverse. From the S.P. Rutherford Collection." In 1652, the four and eight reales were redesigned to distinguish the reformed (full silver) product from the old, debased cobs. Assayer "E" (Antonio de Ergueta) was brought in to clean house and served 1650-79, well into the reign of Charles II, as here. The second specimen was lot 207 in Aureo y Calicó sale 448 (Barcelona, March 2025), where it sold for 6,500 € (about US$8,491 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted, "1674.
