Sedwick Treasure Auction 35, lot 1713
Sed35-1713r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1713 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 35 (Winter Park, FL, May 2024), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 2 reales, 1674 E. Rare earlier date from this wreck, rather broad piece with corrosion but decent detail including date below cross, some pillars and legend showing. With generic certificate from the salvor. Recovered from Loosdrecht, sunk in 1719 off the Isle of Wight, south of England." This type, struck 1667-1701, is probably the most common two reales cob. It is the only one that can be collected by date. The corrosion mentioned in the auction description likely accounts for this specimen's light weight. Assayer Ergueta is recorded for 1651-78.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 4.69 grams.

Catalog reference: Cayón-7334; S-P37b; KM-24; Cal-396.
