Bolivia 1662-P E 4 reales
This specimen was lot 695 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $510. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 4 reales, 1662 E, ex-Ponte. Broad flan AU (non-toned, muted luster) with well-centered but weakly struck full cross-lions-castles, full but off-center pillars-and-waves with two bold dates on that side, two assayers and three mintmarks. Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection." In 1652, the four and eight reales were redesigned to distinguish the reformed (full silver) product from the old, debased cobs. Assayer "E" (Antonio de Ergueta) was brought in to clean house and served 1650-79.
