Bohemia 1717 1/2 thaler KM-668
This specimen was lot 2625 in Sincona sale 43 (Zürich, October 2017), where it sold for 375 CHF (about US$448 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Osterreich, Karl VI. 1711-1740 1/2 Taler 1717. Kuttenberg. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. NGC AU55. (Holy Roman Empire, Charles VI, 1711-40, half thaler of 1717, Kuttenberg mint. Very fine-extremely fine.)"
This five year type was struck at Kuttenberg. This date is scarce; a draped bust variety (KM-688) is much more available for 1717. A similar thaler exists (Dav-1071) but is much costlier. The oval shape derives from the use of roller dies, which were gradually superseded by the screw press in the eighteenth century.
