Künker sale 386, lot 5499

This specimen was lot 5499 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €2,000 (about US$2,585 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Matthias, 1608-1612-1619. Reichstaler 1618, Kuttenberg. Münzmeister Sebastian Hölzl. R Feine Patina, leichte Prägeschwäche, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Holy Roman Empire, Matthias, 1612-19, thaler of 1618, Kuttenberg mint. Rare, fine patina, slightly weakly struck, very fine to extremely fine.)"

The SCWC lists this type for 1613-19 under Bohemia. Kuttenberg, now Kutná Hora, was indeed in Bohemia, but was run by the Hapsburgs as an ordinary branch mint. The town was devastated during the Thirty Years War and the mines fell into ruin. Other Bohemian thalers for 1618 include Dav-3061 and Dav-3068.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 29.05 g.

Catalog reference: KM 162, Dav-3071; Dietiker 517; Halacka 528; Voglh. 115 III.
