Belize 1992 250 dollars
This specimen was lot 30132 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2015), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "BELIZE. 250 Dollars, 1992. NGC PROOF-69 ULTRA CAMEO. Full Troy ounce of gold. From a mintage of 500 pieces. Struck for the 50th anniversary of the Battle of El Alamein. Nice portrait of General Montgomery." This commemorative, of complete irrelevance to Belizean history or natural beauty, was accompanied by 100, 50 and 25 dollars in gold (KM 112, 111 and 110) and ten and five dollars in silver (KM 109 and 108). Belize was formerly known as British Honduras. Great Britain expressed willingness to grant independence prior to 1981 but the English-speaking locals were nervous about occasional threats from Guatemala to invade and annex the territory.
