Sincona sale 80, lot 2053

This specimen was lot 2053 in Sincona sale 80 (Zürich, October 2022), where it sold for 725 CHF (about US$869 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "BELIZE, Republik. 50 Dollars 1992. El Alamein. Rare. Only 500 pieces struck. Choice Proof." This commemorative, of complete irrelevance to Belizean history or natural beauty, was accompanied by 250, 100 and 25 dollars in gold (KM 113, 112 and 110) and ten and five dollars in silver (KM 109 and 108). Belize was formerly known as British Honduras. Great Britain expressed willingness to grant independence prior to 1981 but the English-speaking locals were nervous about occasional threats from Guatemala to invade and annex the territory.

Recorded mintage: 500 proofs.

Specification: 7.81 g, 0.999 fine gold, 0.250 troy oz AGW. This specimen is 7.79 g.
