Jean Elsen sale 147, lot 1326

This specimen was lot 1326 in Jean Elsen sale 147 (Brussels, June 2021), where it sold for €260 (about US$380 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BELGIQUE, Royaume, Léopold II (1865-1909), 1 frank, 1886NL. Refrappe en cuivre. Tranche cannelée. Rare. Superbe. (kingdom of Belgium, Leopold II, 1865-1909, one frank of 1886, Dutch legends, restrike in copper, reeded edge. Rare, Extremely Fine.)"

This type was struck with French legends (KM 28.1) and with Dutch legends, the first Belgian franc so produced. The variety with Dutch legends earns a premium. This date comes with several varieties in the engraver's signature (see KM 29.2 without dot).

Recorded mintage: 1,026,000.

Specification: 5 g, 0.835 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM 29.1, Bogaert 1242B3.
