from the Stack's Bowers 2019 ANA sale, lot 22278
Belgium SB819-22278r.jpg

This specimen was lot 22278 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "BELGIUM. Franc, 1886. Brussels Mint. Leopold II. NGC MS-62. Sharply struck with dark toning over most of the original, still lustrous surfaces." This type was struck with French legends and with Dutch legends, the first Belgian franc so produced. The variety with Dutch legends earns a premium.

Recorded mintage: 1,250,000 plus 1,026,000 with Dutch legends (KM 29.1).

Specification: 5 g, .835 silver.

Catalog reference: KM-28.1.
