Bavaria 1815 gold gulden Fr-285
This specimen was lot 5191 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €3,400 (about US$4,732 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BAYERN, HERZOGTUM, SEIT 1623 KURFÜRSTENTUM, SEIT 1806 KÖNIGREICH, Maximilian I. (IV.) Joseph, 1799-1806-1825. Goldgulden 1815. Neujahrsgoldgulden. Präsent der Stadt Würzburg. GOLD. R Feine Goldpatina, fast vorzüglich. (Germany, kingdom of Bavaria, Maximilian Joseph, goldgulden of 1815, for the New Year, presented by the city of Würzburg. Rare, fine gold patina, about extremely fine.)
Die Stadt Würzburg war seit dem 15. Jahrhundert verpflichtet, ihrem jeweiligen Landesherren als Herzog von Franken eine Zahlung von 50 Goldgulden zum Neujahr eines jeden Jahres zu leisten, vermutlich in Ablösung einer alten Naturalabgabe. Auch nachdem Würzburg an Bayern gefallen war, wurde dieser Brauch beibehalten. (Since the 15th century, the city of Würzburg has been obliged to pay its rulers, as Duke of Franconia, 50 gold florins for the New Year of each year, presumably in replacement of an old levy in kind. Even after Würzburg fell to Bavaria, this custom was retained.)"
