Sincona sale 90, lot 1118

This specimen was lot 1118 in Sincona sale 90 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 7,500 CHF (about US$9,911 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Würzburg, Bistum, Ferdinand von Österreich, 1806-1814. Goldgulden 1809, München. Neujahrsgoldgulden. Sehr selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. NGC MS63. (Germany, bishopric of Würzburg, Ferdinand of Austria, 1806-14, goldgulden of 1809, Munich mint, for the New Year. Very rare, especially in this condition.)"

Since the 15th century, the city of Würzburg has been obliged to pay its rulers, as Duke of Franconia, 50 gold florins for the New Year of each year, presumably in replacement of an old levy in kind. Even after Würzburg fell to Bavaria, this custom was retained. In 1809, Würzburg was no longer an independent state, having been annexed to Bavaria.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.25 g, 0.770 fine gold, this specimen 3.26 g.

Catalog reference: KM 467, Divo/S. 237. Fr-3741.
