UBS sale 85, lot 214

This specimen was lot 214 in UBS sale 85 (Zürich, September 2010), where it sold for 6,200 CHF (about US$7,073 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND, Bayern, Herzogtum, 1623 Kurfürstentum, 1806 Königreich, Maximilian III. Joseph, 1745-1777, Donaugolddukat 1756. Brustbild mit Schärpe nach rechts. Rv. Lagernder Flussgott mit Quellurne und Wappenschild, im Abschnitt die Jahreszahl. Sehr selten. Lt. dez. Min. Schrötlingsf. auf Rv. Sehr schön-vorzüglich." (Germany, Electorate of Bavaria, Maximilian III Joseph, 1745-77, Danube gold ducat of 1756. Bust with sash facing right; reverse: lounging river god, date below. Very rare, tiny adjustment marks on the reverse, Very Fine to Extremely Fine.)

This type, struck 1756-62 from gold washed from the Danube, is much (7x) rarer than the regular issue with the shield reverse (KM 228).
