from Künker sale 352, lot 1766

This specimen was lot 1766 in Künker sale 352 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €15,000 (about US$20,876 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BAYERN, HERZOGTUM, SEIT 1623 KURFÜRSTENTUM, Maximilian III. Joseph, 1745-1777. Dukat 1760, München. Isargold. Geharnischtes Brustbild r. mit umgelegtem Mantel, Ordensband und der Kette des Ordens vom Goldenen Vlies//Der Flußgott der Isar lagert nach r. und entleert mit beiden Händen eine Wasserurne, darunter das vierfeldige Wappen (Bayern/Pfalz); im Hintergrund Stadtansicht von München mit der Frauenkirche, im Abschnitt die Jahreszahl MDCCLX ·. GOLD. RR Hübsche Goldpatina, vorzüglich. Erworben 1953 bei der Firma Julius Jenke, München. (Germany, electorate of Bavaria, Maximilian III Joseph, 1745-77, ducat of 1760, Munich mint, Isar river gold. Obverse: armored and mantled bust right. wearing the Order of the Golden Fleece; reverse: Isar river god reclining right, and empties a water urn with both hands, the quartered arms of Bavaria and the Palatinate) below; in the background a city view of Munich with the Frauenkirche, in the exergue the year MDCCLX. Rare, handsome gold toning, extremely fine. Bought from Julius Jenke in 1953.)"

This type, struck 1756, 1760 and 1762 from gold washed from the Isar, is rare. There is an extensive issue of these river gold ducats that dwindled away in the mid-nineteenth century as bullion production tailed off.
