Sincona sale 5, lot 35

This specimen was lot 35 in Sincona sale 5 (Zürich, May 2012), where it sold for 21,000 CHF (about US$25,841 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Basel 5 Dukaten 1740. Stempel von Johann Jakob Handmann. Av. Die acht Vogteiwappen über der Stadtansicht, im Abschnitt Füllhorn, Jahreszahl und Signatur. Rv. Basilisk mit geschweiften Wappen nach links. Äusserst selten und prachtvolle Erhaltung. Fast FDC. (Switzerland, canton of Basel, five ducats of 1740. Dies by Johann Jakob Handmann. Obverse: arms of the wards over city view, date and engraver's initials below; reverse: basilisk supports the city arms to left. Of the highest rarity and condition, choice uncirculated)"

All the gold coins of Basel are rare; this one is listed in the SCWC as a pattern, one of an extensive series (KM Pn7 thru Pn17) struck in 1740.
