Basel 1740 1/4 thaler KM-143
This specimen was lot 3095 in Sincona sale 70 (Zürich, May 2021), where it sold for 325 CHF (about US$431 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SWITZERLAND | Basel | Stadt und Kanton. Vierteltaler 1740, Basel. Basilisk mit grossem geschweiftem Wappenschild. Kettenrand. Gutes vorzüglich. Leicht justiert auf Vorderseite. (Switzerland, city and canton of Basel, quarter thaler of 1740, Basel mint. Reverse: basilisk supports large arms. Good extremely fine, Minor adjustment marks on obverse.)"
Three different quarter thalers are listed for 1740, KM-142, -143, -144, of which KM-142 is the most common. This is the only quarter thaler for this canton in the eighteenth century.
