The first specimen was lot 34185 in Heritage sale 3049 (Long Beach, September 2016), where it sold for $352.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Basel. City 1/4 Taler 1740 MS63 PCGS. Good strike, bright surfaces, and pinpoint details. For accuracy's sake, a slight flan flaw is evident at 2 o'clock on the obverse with several adjustment marks on the reverse at 3 o'clock. Still, rarely encountered in this state of preservation. From the Redwood Collection, Part II." The second specimen was lot 72617 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2022), where it sold for $600. The catalog description[2] noted, "SWITZERLAND. Basel. 1/4 Taler, 1740. PCGS MS-63. A lovely choice example with sharp details and mostly problem free surfaces. For accuracy, there is some adjustment marks on the obverse, however this is typical for the type." Three different quarter thalers are listed for 1740, KM-142, -143, -144, of which KM-142 is the most common. This is the only quarter thaler for this canton in the eighteenth century.
