Basel (1720) 1/2 thaler
The first specimen was lot 5028 in Sincona sale 80 (Zürich, October 2022), where it sold for 600 CHF (about US$719 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "SWITZERLAND | Basel | Stadt und Kanton, Halbtaler o. J. (um 1720), Basel. Stadtansicht [city view]. Extremely fine-uncirculated. Slightly weakly struck." The second specimen was lot 6044 in Sincona sale 81 (Zürich, October 2022), where it sold for 525 CHF (about US$629 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted, "SWITZERLAND | Basel | Stadt und Kanton, Halbtaler o. J. (um 1720), Basel. Stadtansicht [city view]. Good extremely fine. Nicely toned." The canton issued numerous undated half thalers, many lacking photos in the SCWC. This one is attributed therein to 1735 but we will go with the auctioneers' estimate of 1720.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, the first specimen 13.34 g. The second specimen is 13.87 g.
