Künker Auction 425, lot 1790

This specimen was lot 3090 in Sincona sale 70 (Zürich, May 2021), where it sold for 700 CHF (about US$929 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SWITZERLAND | Basel | Stadt und Kanton. Vierteltaler o. J. (um 1710), Basel. Stadtansicht mit Schriftband BASILEA, unten Wertzahl in geschweiftem Schild zwischen D - B. Rv. Wappenkreis um Baslerwappen im Oval. Stempel von Justin de Beyer. Fast FDC. (Switzerland, city and canton of Basel, undated quarter thaler from around 1710, Basel mint. Obverse: City view with BASILEA on a banner above, value in shield below, dividing "D - B". Reverse: Oval city arms, eight shields around. Dies by Justin Beyer. About uncirculated.)"

The SCWC lists this as issued in 1739, but we'll side with the auctioneers in placing this with the undated thaler and double thaler of 1710. The second specimen was lot 1790 in Künker Auction 425 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €240 (about US$340 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"EUROPÄISCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · SCHWEIZ, BASEL Stadt. 1/4 Taler o. J. (nach 1700). Feine Patina, vorzüglich. (city of Basel, undated quarter thaler, circa 1700. Fine patina, extremely fine.)"

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, the first specimen 7.09 g, the second specimen 7,14 g.

Catalog reference: KM 122, Winterstein (Taler) 187. D.T. 764, HMZ 2-102a. The second specimen D./T. 765.
