Baden 1836 thaler Dav-523
The first specimen was lot 750 in Sincona sale 11 (Zürich, May 2013), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND Baden-Durlach, Grossherzogtum Leopold, 1830-1852. Kronentaler 1836, Karlsruhe. Zu ihrer Völker Heil. Patina. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Grand Duchy of Baden, Leopold, 1830-52. Crown thaler of 1836, Karlsruhe mint. To our people. Toned, very fine to extremely fine.)"
The second specimen was lot 1227 in Sincona sale 18 (Zürich, May 2014), where it sold for CHF 180 (about US$237 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"Kronentaler 1836. Karlsruhe Zu ihrer Völker Heil. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Grand duchy of Baden-Durlach, crown thaler of 1836, Karlsruhe mint. Very fine to extremely fine.)"
This commemorative is more available than most of the regular issues of the period. The SCWC reports the weight as 18.14 g but the weight reported for the kronen thaler (29.48 g for Dav-519) matches the specimen offered here, so we will use that.
Recorded mintage: 18,000.
Specification: 29.48 g, 0.900 fine silver, both specimens 29.48 g.
