Sincona sale 39, lot 3947

This specimen was lot 3947 in Sincona sale 39 (Zürich, May 2017), where it sold for 450 CHF (about US$540 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE - AUSTRIA, Leopold I. 1657-1705 Taler 1698. Wien. Vorzüglich. (Holy Roman Empire, Leopold I, 1657-1705, thaler of 1698, Vienna mint. Extremely fine.)"

This type was issued 1696-1700 and is fairly common. Other Vienna mint thalers of Leopold I include Dav-3227 (struck 1672), -3228 (struck 1681-83), -3229 (struck 1692-95) and -3229A (struck 1695). It seems unlikely that the emperor was ever called "the Hogmouth" to his face.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 28.07 g.

Catalog reference: Herinek 597, KM 1275.5, Dav-3230.
