Austria 1699 thaler Dav-3245A
The first specimen was lot 53623 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $360. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRIA. Holy Roman Empire. Taler, 1699. Hall Mint. Leopold I. PCGS Genuine--Mount Removed, AU Details." The auctioneers catalogued this as Dav-3245, which is listed for 1694-1700 but not 1699; this one is Dav-3245A. The imperial bust is slightly different. Altho Leopold is nicknamed "the Hogmouth" by numismatists, we don't know if anyone was rash enough to call him that during his lifetime. The second specimen was lot 3142 in Künker Auction 426 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €320 (about US$453 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"HABSBURGISCHE ERBLANDE-ÖSTERREICH · RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Leopold I., 1657-1705. Reichstaler 1699, Hall. Winz. Kratzer, sehr schön. (Holy Roman Empire, Leopold I, 1657-1705, thaler of 1699, Hall mint. Light hairlines, very fine.)"
