Steve Album sale 54, lot 756

This specimen was lot 756 in Steve Album Auction 54 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2026), where it sold for $960. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRIA: Leopold I, 1657-1705, AR 15 kreuzer, Hall, 1690, struck with roller dies, light obverse hairlines, still very attractive, lightly toned reverse, two-year type, rare date, XF-AU." This type was struck at Hall in 1688 and 1690 and is common. A similar fifteen kreuzer (KM 1302) was struck at St. Veit. Roller dies had a vogue in the late seventeenth century as they were faster than screw presses; however, die manufacture and setup is more difficult and eventually the technique was abandoned. Fifteen kreuzer was one quarter gulden or one-sixth of a thaler.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.25 g, silver, 30 mm diameter, this specimen 6.28 g.

Catalog reference: KM-1344, Herinek-981.
