Künker Auction 439, lot 2272

This specimen was lot 2272 in Künker sale 439 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €3,400 (about US$4,677 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Ferdinand III., 1625-1637-1657. 2 Dukaten 1646, Wien. GOLD. R Felder bearbeitet, fast vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung Kommerzialrat Dr. Herbert Wenzel, Wien. Erworben 1981 von der Tiroler Münzhandlung Sigmund Werkner, Innsbruck. (Holy Roman Empire, Ferdinand III, 1637-57, double ducat of 1646, Vienna mint. Rare, fields tooled, about extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1641-57 and is rare despite the many years of production. St. Veit also struck double ducats in this period (KM 936/Fr-234), which feature round arms on the reverse.

Specification: 6.98 g, 0.986 fine gold, 21-22 mm diameter, this specimen 6,87 g.
