Sincona sale 83, lot 3387

This specimen was lot 3387 in Sincona sale 83 (Zürich, May 2023), where it sold for 8,000 CHF (about US$10,707 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "OSTERREICH, Ferdinand III. 1637-1657. Dukat 1648, Wien. Mit dem Münzmeisterzeichen von J. C. Richthausen. Äusserst selten. NGC MS63. Miller zu Aichholz und Herinek kennen Nur das Exemplar mit dem Münzmeisterzeichen von H. J. Stadler (Austria, Ferdinand III, 1637-57, ducat of 1648, Vienna mint, Extremely rare; Miller zu Aichholz and Herinek did not know of any examples with this mintmaster)." Similar ducats with the standing figure of the emperor were struck at Graz (Fr-236/KM 860), Glatz (Fr-236a) and St.-Veit (Fr-237). All are rare but the Vienna product is the most available.
