Künker sale 294, lot 3409

This specimen was lot 3409 in Künker sale 294 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €13,000 (about US$17,522 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Erzherzog Ferdinand Karl, 1632-1662. Dukat o. J. (1649), Hall. FERD : CA : D : G : - · ARC : AV : Geharnischtes Brustbild r. mit umgelegtem Mantel und der Kette des Ordens vom Goldenen Vlies//DVX · BVRGVNDIÆ - COMES · TYROLIS : Gekröntes, ovales und verziertes, mehrfeldiges Wappen, umher die Kette des Ordens vom Goldenen Vlies. GOLD. Von allergrößter Seltenheit. Winz. Randfehler, vorzüglich. (Holy Roman Empire, archduke Ferdinand Charles, 1632-62, undated ducat, Hall mint. Obverse: armored, mantled bust with the Order of the Golden Fleece; reverse: crowned, quartered arms, Order of the Golden Fleece around. Very rare, edge defects, extremely fine.)"

This prince, the last archduke permitted to mint coinage, issued gold coins in the denominations of half, one, two, five and six ducats, all rare.
