Austria (1705-11) 2 thaler Dav-1016
This specimen was lot 4867 in Sincona sale 9 (Zürich, October 2012), where it sold for 1400 CHF (about US$1,771 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ÖSTERREICH Josef II. 1765-1790. Doppeltaler o. J., Hall. Dunkle Tönung. Kl. Schrötlingsf. Fast vorzüglich-vorzüglich. (Austria, Joseph II, 1765-90, double thaler without date, Hall mint, dark toning, slight planchet defects, extremely fine to good extremely fine.)"
This type is incorrectly attributed to Joseph II (1765-90) but is actually an issue of his great-great uncle Joseph I (1705-11). Austrian double thalers of the eighteenth century are rare.
Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.
Specification: silver, this specimen 57.02 g.
