Australia 1920-M sovereign
This specimen was lot 20147 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $2,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRALIA. Sovereign, 1920-M. Melbourne Mint. PCGS AU-55. A SCARCE date and mint that seldom appears on the market. A nice original example that exhibits light signs of handling consistent for the grade with plenty of luster in the protected areas. Attractive light apricot tone graces the open fields while the protected areas are a more golden color." This date, from a type struck 1911-28 at Perth, Melbourne (shown here) and Sydney, is very scarce despite the ample mintage.
Recorded mintage: 530,000, a rare date.
Specification: 7.99 g, 0.917 fine gold, .2354 troy oz AGW.
Catalog reference: S-3999; Fr-39; KM-29.
