Sincona sale 23, lot 2086

This specimen was lot 2086 in Sincona sale 23 (Zürich, May 2015), where it sold for 170 CHF (about US$214 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Augsburg, Stadt, Taler 1764. Titel Franz I. Fast vorzüglich-sehr schön. (Germany, city of Augsburg, thaler of 1764, struck in the name of Francis I, very fine to extremely fine.)"

This, like most Augsburg thalers, is a one year type but actually fairly common. The bust of the Emperor indicates the city's fealty to him only and not the neighboring Duke of Bavaria or Bishop of Augsburg.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 27.96 g.

Catalog reference: Dav-1929; KM-183, Forster 640.
