This specimen was lot 1622 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $9,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. Aragon. Ducat, ND. Juan II (1458-79). NGC AU-55. RARE. Crowned facing portrait; Reverse: Crowned arms of Catalonia. Nice strike. Attractive portrait. Lightly toned with underlying luster." In the fifteenth century, Spain was a geographical expression, not a unified realm. His son Ferdinand, by marriage to Isabella of Castile, would unify the two major parts of Spain, Aragon and Castile.
