Afghanistan SH1305(8) amani
This specimen was lot 1473 in Stephen Album sale 50 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $540. The catalog description[1] noted, "AFGHANISTAN: Amanullah, 1919-1929, AV amani, SH1305 year 8, toughra in wreath // mosque; lustrous, AU-UNC, ex Hakim Hamidi Collection." This scarce type struck SH1304-1306 was equal to ten Afghan rupees or not quite 4½ Indian rupees. Coins of this period are sometimes dated on the traditional Muslim calendar, or on the Solar Hegira calendar, as here, which starts on the same date as the traditional Hegira calendar but uses solar years rather than lunar years.
