Stephen Album sale 50, lot 1467

This specimen was lot 1467 in Stephen Album sale 50 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $840. The catalog description[1] noted, "AFGHANISTAN: Amanullah, 1919-1929, AV 2 amani, SH1303, toughra in wreath, date below, honorific title al-ghazi ("the victorious") to right // mosque within rayed octagon, slightly weak strike, AU, ex Hakim Hamidi Collection." This scarce type struck SH1299-1303 was equal to twenty Afghan rupees or not quite nine Indian rupees. Coins of this period are sometimes dated on the traditional Muslim calendar, or on the Solar Hegira calendar, as here, which starts on the same date as the traditional Hegira calendar but uses solar years rather than lunar years.
