Augsburg 1574 guldenthaler
This specimen was lot 42286 in Stack's Bowers Summer 2026 Global Showcase Auction (Pittsburgh, September 2026), where it sold for $793. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Augsburg. 60 Kreuzer, 1574. Augsburg Mint. NGC AU Details--Tooled. Overall most marks on the surface are manufacturing marks from roller dies going in the same direction but, as stated, there are a few tooling marks around the legend. Nice dark patina highlighting the strong strike with lovely details and limited signs of handling. A RARE type that is desirable even with damage. From the Heisner Collection from Down Under. Ex: Gorny & Mosch 294 (3/2023) Lot # 1176." At this point, the gulden was about 5/6 of a thaler. In the next century, it would decline to 2/3 of a thaler and was struck in that format in large numbers by many states. This type, struck 1572-75, was accompanied by a half gulden thaler.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
Catalog reference: Dav-3; KM-MB62 (listed as 60 kreuzer).
