Künker sale 335, lot 3360

This specimen was lot 3360 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €1,600 (about US$2,094 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"AUGSBURG, STADT, Guldentaler (60 Kreuzer) 1573, mit Titel Maximilians II. Selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Scharf ausgeprägtes Exemplar mit feiner Patina, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (Germany, city of Augsburg, gulden thaler of 1573, in the name of Maximilian II. Rare, especially in this quality. Sharply struck with fine patina, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

At this point, the gulden was about 5/6 of a thaler. In the next century, it would decline to 2/3 of a thaler and was struck in that format in large numbers by many states. This type was accompanied by a half gulden thaler.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 24,51 g.

Catalog reference: Dav-10003; Forster 77.
