Sincona sale 46, lot 258

This specimen was lot 258 in Sincona sale 46 (Zürich, May 2018), where it sold for 250 CHF (about US$300 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Bayern, Königreich, Ludwig II. 1864-1886. 10 Mark 1874 D, München. Fast vorzüglich. (kingdom of Bavaria, Louis II, 1864-86, ten mark of 1874, Munich mint. About extremely fine.)"

King Ludwig II ruled until 1886, when he was deposed in favor of his brother. Disliked for his extravagance and his homosexuality, he died soon after under very mysterious circumstances. This type struck 1874-81 is common.

Recorded mintage: 406,610 plus proofs.
