Jean Elsen sale 141, lot 1422

This specimen was lot 1422 in Jean Elsen sale 141 (Brussels, June 2019), where it sold for €650 (about US$862 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XV (1715-1774), AR quart d'écu aux huit L, 1725X, Amiens. D/ B. jeune à d., l., dr. et cuir. R/ Croix formée de quatre lis couronnés, cantonnée de huit L. Rare. Très Beau/Superbe. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, silver quarter écu of the eight "L's" of 1725, Amiens mint. Obverse: laureate, draped and armored young bust right; reverse: cross formed of four crowned lilies, cantonned with eight "L's". Rare, Very Fine/Extremely Fine.)"

This specimen was offered again as lot 1814 in Jean Elsen sale 164 (Brussels, March 2026), where it sold for € (about US$ including buyer's fees). This type was struck 1725 only and is rare. It had a face value of 20 sols tournois and was the last issue of this denomination.

Recorded mintage: 245,016[2], the most common date.

Specification: 5.89 g, 0.917 fine silver, 26-27 mm diameter. Engraved by Norbert Roëttiers, this specimen 5,90 g.
