Heritage sale 3010, lot 21512

This specimen was lot 21512 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it sold for $5,462.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carlos III gold 4 Escudos 1782FF, AU58 NGC, appealing old-time rose gold patina with luster in the legends and very sharp details. Very scarce and desirable in this pleasing quality." This type was struck 1773-89 and is among the more available of Mexican colonial four escudos but, like the smaller two escudos, remains scarce. Assayer FF is noted for the years 1778-84.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.53 g, 0.901 fine gold, .392 troy oz AGW; this specimen: 13.44 grams, 30.60 mm.
