Jean Elsen sale 142, lot 1366

This specimen was lot 1366 in Jean Elsen sale 142 (Brussels, September 2019), where it sold for €700 (about US$909 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XV (1715-1774), AV double louis d'or du Béarn au bandeau, 1765, Pau. D/ T. à g., ceinte d'un bandeau. R/ Ecus ovales de France et de Navarre sous une couronne. Traces d'ajustage. Beau à Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, gold double louis of the hair ribbon of 1765, Pau mint. Obverse: head left, hair tied in a ribbon; reverse: oval arms of France and Navarre under a crown. Traces of adjustment marks, Fine - Very Fine.)"

The Pau mint in the French province of Béarn in the Pyrenées struck this type 1742-45, 1750-70. This is a somewhat better date.

Recorded mintage: 73,692[2].

Specification: 16.31 g, 0.917 fine gold, reeded edge, 28-29 mm diameter, designed by J.-C. Röettiers; this specimen 16,21 g.
