SB925-74749r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74749 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 1/10 Ecu (12 Sols), 1765-A. Paris Mint. Louis XV. PCGS AU-58. Variety without dot (1st semester). From the Richard August Collection." This coin, called a dixième d'écu au bandeau, was the French equivalent of a dime. In the coinage system of the ancien régime, the 1/10 écu = 12 sols. The type was struck 1740-72 but is recorded for the Paris mint ("A") in 1740-54, 1756-61 and 1763-70 only. Despite the interrupted dates of issue, Paris was the most faithful issuer of this denomination.

Recorded mintage: 172,225, a common date[2].

Specification: 2.95 g, 0.917 fine silver, 22 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by J.-C. Röettiers.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 850, Dr/2 № 587, KM-511.1; Gad-292.
