from the Stack's Bowers 2017 ANA sale, lot 20463
Great Britain SB517-20463r.jpg

This specimen was lot 20463 in Stack's Bowers ANA Auction (Denver, CO, August 2017), where it sold for $4,700. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. 1/2 Guinea, 1731. George II (1727-60). NGC MS-63. Sharply struck with good definition of the fine details visible without the aid of magnification, lustrous and very attractive. A lovely example of a popular series." This type, struck 1728-39, is priced about the same as the accompanying guinea, suggesting that it is considerably scarcer. A rare variety exists (KM 565.2) with "E.I.C." below the bust, indicating gold from the East India Company.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 4.17 g, 0.917 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-345; S-3681A; KM-565.1.
