Künker sale 423, lot 209

This specimen was lot 209 in Künker Auction 423 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €3,200 (about US$4,531 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"HABSBURGISCHE ERBLANDE-ÖSTERREICH · RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Franz II., 1792-1804. 1/2 Souverain d'or 1793 F, Hall, für die Niederlande. Büste r. mit Lorbeerkranz, darunter die Münzstättensignatur F//Gekröntes Wappen der Österreichischen Niederlande, umher die Kette des Ordens vom Goldenen Vlies, dahinter Andreaskreuz. Rauch 28, Wien 1982, Nr. 2286. GOLD. RR Nur 1.892 Exemplare geprägt. Schrötlingsfehler, sehr schön. Exemplar der Auktion H. D. (Holy Roman Empire, Francis II, 1792-1804, gold half sovereign of 1793, Hall mint, struck for the Netherlands. Obverse: laureate bust right, mintmark below; reverse: crowned arms of the Austrian Netherlands, order chain around, over a St. Andrews cross. Very rare, only 1,892 pieces struck, planchet defects, very fine.)"

This type is filed under the Austrian Netherlands, an area which is now Belgium and Luxembourg. Besides Hall, similar coins are known from Vienna, Milan and Brussels. The type was struck at Hall 1793-96 and previous souverains d'or date back to the reign of Maria Theresa.
