Spain 1662(g) N 8 maravedis
This specimen was lot 1177 in Aureo y Calicó sale 447 (Barcelona, March 2025), where it sold for 75 € (about US$98 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "1662. Felipe IV. Granada. N. 8 maravedis. Nice. EBC- [about extremely fine]. Ex Aureo 09/27/2005, no. 584." The Spanish mints produced large quantities of copper coins during the reign of Philip III but ceased after his death in 1621, probably due to oversupply. Copper coinage resumed about 1660 and large quantities were struck, again leading to rejection by the populace. This product of the Granada mint is noted for 1661-64. Other mints included Burgos, La Coruña, Cuenca, Madrid, Segovia, Seville and Valladolid. Numista calls these billon but they were actually copper with a silver wash which is seen only on high grade survivors. Granada's mintmark was a pomegranate (granada in Spanish).
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 2.3 g, copper, this specimen 2.43 g.
