Jean Elsen sale 145, lot 1562
Brabant in 1559, from Shepherd's atlas

This specimen was lot 1562 in Jean Elsen sale 145 (Brussels, September 2020), where it sold for €340 (about US$485 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe IV (1621-1665), AR ducaton, 1644, Anvers. Deuxième type. D/ B. cuirassé à d. R/ Ecu couronné, soutenu par deux lions. En dessous, le bijou de la Toison d'or. Légère faiblesse de frappe au revers. Flan large. Belle patine. Très Beau à Superbe/Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Philip IV, 1621-65, silver ducaton of 1644, Antwerp mint, second type. Obverse: armored bust right; reverse: crowned arms, supported by two lions, the jewel of the Golden Fleece below. Slightly weak on the reverse, large flan, nice patina, Very Fine - Extremely Fine/Very Fine.)"

The type shown here was struck at the Antwerp mint 1622-65 (hand mintmark, shown here) and at the Maastricht mint 1625-31. The other provinces issued this type, including Artois, Flanders, Tournai and Luxembourg.
