Jean Elsen sale 144, lot 1158

This specimen was lot 1158 in Jean Elsen sale 144 (Brussels, March 2020), where it sold for €180 (about US$237 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"LUXEMBOURG, Duché, Elisabeth de Görlitz, engagiste (1425-1451), veuve de Jean de Bavière, AR gros, 1e émission (1425-1433), Luxembourg. D/ Ecu incliné et heaumé de Bavière-Palatinat. R/ Dans un polylobe, l'écu de Luxembourg posé sur une croix longue. Légère faiblesse de frappe. Très Beau. (duchy of Luxembourg, Elizabeth of Gorlitz, mortgager, 1425-51, widow of John of Bavaria, silver groat, first emission of 1425-33, Luxembourg mint. Obverse: tilted shield and helmet of Bavaria-Palatinate; reverse: shield of Luxembourg over a long cross in a polylobe. Slight weakness of strike, Very Fine.)"

Sigismund of Luxembourg, Holy Roman Emperor 1433-37, defaulted on a mortgage to Elizabeth of Gorlitz, who foreclosed on the collateral, namely, the duchy of Luxembourg, then much larger than today's grand duchy. She ruled as duchess 1411-43, when the duke of Burgundy seized the province.
