Jean Elsen sale 144, lot 1155

This specimen was lot 1155 in Jean Elsen sale 144 (Brussels, March 2020), where it sold for €360 (about US$474 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"LUXEMBOURG, Duché, Jean de Bavière et Elisabeth de Görlitz, engagistes (1419-1425), AR beyersgroschen, 1419-1424, Luxembourg. D/ Griffon assis de f., ten. devant lui l'écu écartelé de Bavière-Palatinat. R/ Ecu luxembourgeois sur une longue croix pattée. Très Beau à Superbe. (duchy of Luxembourg, John of Bavaria and Elizabeth of Gorlitz, mortgagers, 1419-25, undated silver beyersgroschen, Luxembourg mint. Obverse: a griffon supports the quartered arms of Bavaria and the Palatinate; reverse: arms of Luxembourg over a long cross pattée. Very Fine to Extremely Fine.)"

Sigismund of Luxembourg, Holy Roman Emperor 1433-37, defaulted on a mortgage to Elizabeth of Gorlitz, who foreclosed on the collateral, namely, the duchy of Luxembourg, then much larger than today's grand duchy. She ruled as duchess 1411-43, when the duke of Burgundy seized the province.
