Luxembourg (1415-19) gros
This specimen was lot 1154 in Jean Elsen sale 144 (Brussels, March 2020), where it sold for €140 (about US$185 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"LUXEMBOURG, Duché, Elisabeth de Görlitz, engagiste (1415-1419), AR nouveau gros, Luxembourg. D/ Lion luxembourgeois. R/ Croix pattée cantonnée de deux étoiles et des lions de Brabant et de Limbourg. Fine griffe. presque Très Beau. (duchy of Luxembourg, Elizabeth of Gorlitz, pretender, 1415-19, silver new groat, Luxembourg mint. Obverse: Luxemburgish lion; reverse: cross pattée cantonned with two stars and two lions. Fine scratches, about Very Fine.)"
Sigismund of Luxembourg, Holy Roman Emperor 1433-37, defaulted on a mortgage to Elizabeth of Gorlitz, who foreclosed on the collateral, namely, the duchy of Luxembourg, then much larger than today's grand duchy. She ruled as duchess 1411-43, when the duke of Burgundy seized the province.
