Jean Elsen sale 146, lot 28

This specimen was lot 28 in Jean Elsen sale 146 (Brussels, November 2020), where it sold for €280 (about US$408 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

" FRANCE, METZ, Evêché, Conrad Bayer de Boppard (1415-1459), AR demi-gros, Marsal. D/ CORAD'- EPS MET' L'évêque à mi-corps deb. de f., bénissant et ten. une crosse. R/ + MONETA NOVA DE MARSA Croix pattée. Rare. Très Beau. (bishopric of Metz, Conrad Bayer de Boppard, 1415-59, silver half groat, Marsal mint. Obverse: half-length bust of the bishop facing, one hand raised in blessing and the other holding a crozier; reverse: cross patteé. Rare, Very Fine.)"

The town of Metz was occupied by the French in the 1550's but was not annexed until the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648.
