Sincona sale 87, lot 3103

This specimen was lot 3103 in Sincona sale 87 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 2,100 CHF (about US$2,828 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEDEN, Adolph Friedrich, 1751-1771. 2 Mark 1751, Stockholm. Auf seinen Tod am 25. März, ausgegeben bei seiner Beisetzung am 27. September. Sehr selten in dieser Erhaltung. NGC MS67. Prachtexemplar. Das durch NGC höchstbewertete Exemplar. (kingdom of Sweden, Adolph Frederick, 1751-71, two marks of 1751, Stockholm mint, on the king's death on March 25, struck for his funeral on September 27. Very rare in this condition, cabinet piece, finest certified by NGC.)"

The Scandinavian countries and Sweden in particular, have a tradition of striking largesse coins to be thrown to the crowd on state occasions such as weddings, funerals and coronations. The SCWC lists three different two mark for this occasion: KM XM44 (crowned bust, 7.7 g), XM44a (crowned bust, 10.15 g) and XMA44 (bare head, shown here).

Recorded mintage: 4,539 plus 8,105 of XM44a plus an unknown number of XM44.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM XMA44, Delzanno 196, AAH 182.
